New Burner, First Use

When a burner is brand new, there's a short curing period during the first burn. We recommend filling the burner to the max line and letting it burn continuously for about two hours. Any light odor during this stage is normal and will dissipate once the burner has completed its initial burn.

If the odor continues after the curing burn, the burner may simply need a clean. Even new burners can pick up dust or debris during installation, construction, or cleaning in the room.

Burner Needs Cleaning

If the burner has been sitting unused or exposed to dust, construction debris, or accidental spills, this can create an odor when heated. Common sources include dust that settled during installation, cleaning products used nearby, something accidentally dropped into the burner, or old fuel left sitting in the reservoir.

The solution in both cases is the same - a full clean and reset - and it resolves the vast majority of odor issues regardless of how old the burner is.

How to Clean Your Burner

Step 1: Empty the burner

Ethanol can be safely disposed of down the drain, it's similar to household alcohol. Follow with plenty of water to flush.

Step 2: Wash the burner

Your burner is dishwasher safe, so you can run it through the dishwasher. Or wash by hand with warm water and mild dish soap and rinse well.

Step 3: Dry completely

This step is essential. Any remaining moisture will dilute the new fuel and affect performance. Give the burner adequate time to dry fully, don't rush this step.

Step 4: Refill and light

Fill to the maximum fill line with fresh e-NRG bioethanol and light as normal. Your burner should now operate without any noticeable odor.

A Note on Fuel

For clean, odor-free performance, it's important to use e-NRG bioethanol in your EcoSmart burner. If you've been using a different fuel, we recommend emptying and cleaning the burner fully, switching to e-NRG, and then reassessing any ongoing odor.

If you've worked through these steps and the odor is still present, please reach out to our support team, we're happy to take a closer look.
